Not Just for Kids
CHILDREN’S OUTREACH
Young Shankar Singh couldn’t believe his ears. How could his Vacation Bible School (VBS) teacher know so much about his family? Shankar was attending a VBS led by Gospel for Asia-supported missionary Sukarta Kapur. His teacher, Sukarta’s wife, Hansini, was telling the students a story about an alcoholic father who beat his wife every day and caused a multitude of problems in the family. The children were scared of their father and hid themselves under the bed to escape his wrath. Miraculously, the father found out about salvation through Jesus, which led to a dramatic change in his life. Shankar was only 9 years old, but he really understood the story. That’s because his own father was a raging alcoholic. Shankar, his mother and his
siblings knew what it was like to cower in fear when
their father was home. They longed to see this kind of
change in their home too.
When Shankar left VBS that day, he told his
mother, Jhasmina, about the father in the story who
changed after he met Jesus.
A few days later, Jhasmina appeared in the
church Sukarta pastored. The troubled woman
poured out her heart, sharing her family’s tragic life.
Sukarta was moved by the family’s plight and prayed
fervently for Jhasmina and Shankar.
In a stunningly quick answer to Sukarta’s
prayers, the Singh’s home life was dramatically
changed. Shankar no longer cowers in fear from his
father, because his father stopped drinking and chose
to follow Jesus too. Now the entire family follows
Jesus and can be found worshiping every Sunday at
the church in their village.
